Feeling Small at the Tottori Sand Dunes

Feeling Small at the Tottori Sand Dunes

When I first visited the Tottori Sand Dunes, I was overwhelmed by the scale of the landscape before me.

The sandy slopes seemed to stretch without end. The people walking across them looked so small, reminding me just how tiny we are in the face of nature.

I took this photo to preserve that sense of scale.

About the Photo

I filled the frame with the sweep of the dunes, composing the image so that the people walking across them would appear small.

Sand and grass overlap across the slopes, while people carrying parasols cross the dunes, with the sea and city in the distance. Together, these layers capture the vastness I felt at the Tottori Sand Dunes.
